Keeping fit during Appetizer Season

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and The Laughing Cow.

The holidays are almost here.

Yes, I'm serious.

I also call it "Appetizer Season", for, from the day Halloween dawns until the end of the Super Bowl, it's all miniature sausages, all the time.

Food on a toothpick combined with a busy social schedule and daylight getting shorter can really wreak havoc on healthy eating and exercise.

Magazines are full of advice how to maintain healthy living during the season, but the fact is, it can be really hard. For me, my couch and a blanket always sound a little (OK, a LOT) better than hitting the dark and cold streets for a walk.

When the days get shorter, I try to get some more activity in while I'm at work, since my brain always thinks it's time for bed when it gets dark, and I'm not likely to leave the house or go back out for exercise.

If the weather is nice, I get outside and walk. If I can't do that, then I hit the hallways and stairs at work during lunch.

As far as parties go, I'm afraid there's not any revolutionary advice other than to eat before you go, try to make good food and drink selections at the party, and visit with friends away from the food table.

Oh, yes, I do know that's easier said than done, and I really struggle with the "don't go to a party hungry" concept, because I LOVE party food.

I think the key to keeping fit during the holidays is to create or stay with a routine, even when the weather and your schedule changes, plan ahead.

How do you stay fit as the seasons change and all of the holiday temptations begin? Do tell, for a chance to win!

Share a funny story in the comment section, tweet or blog about this entry (be sure to leave a link to your efforts in the comments below), and you will be entered to win a $150 Visa gift card.

Two (2) valid entries per person, please.

Please keep your comments G-rated as any profanity or offensive content will automatically disqualify you from sweepstakes entry.

Sweepstakes dates are 11/15/10-12/5/10. Find out more from the official contest rules.

  • I am fortunate enough to live in Florida where it never snows. Ok, so I have lived here my whole life and we have had it "Snow" 3 times in my 36 years of life. :) I love to walk and I love this time of year because it is not so humid and you can breathe. :) What is funny is most Floridians weigh less after the cooler holidays than during the summer months when we tend to hibernate. LOL

  • This Thanksgiving I’m planning on keeping a food diary and making sure I don’t go over on calories. I will make sure to stay active over the holidays to burn off the calories.

  • Well, there was the time I dumped a whole pumpkin pie on the floor while talking on the phone. I won't do that again. But it did stop me from eating a whole pie!

  • I'm pretty sure that fighting the guilt my mother lays on me all holiday season long burns the calories I eat compensating for said guilt. So it's a wash!!

  • I don't really stay fit...but I've found that traveling to spend holidays with the family helps because we don't have any left overs in the house. Also? I don't like to bake very much so I only do it when I am going somewhere so that I can take the yummies with me - if they aren't here, I can't shove them in my pie hole.

  • I keep doing my exercise routine during the holiday season, I don't do a lot of baking. When I visit people I try to eat more proteins, fruits and vegetables and just take sample of the goodies so I won't feel deprived. My weekness if eggnog whick is very high in fat and calories so I have to watch myself around that.

  • I try to balance the in home days with being "good" and then give my permission to eat what I want when I'm out.

And then when I eat what I want, it's in moderation. I think that's all I need....a little bit of everything ;)

  • I'm pregnant, so I get a pass this year. :) Last year I managed to LOSE weight during the holidays, though, by tracking my calorie consumption at Livestrong.com. I lost 50 pounds between November and April (when I got pregnant). After the baby comes and our breastfeeding is well established, I plan to get back on the wagon and lose the other 50 (plus the baby weight).

  • Oh. Are we supposed to be doing something to "stay fit" during "Appetizer Season?" Hmm.... Seriously though, I just keep on keepin' on. So far, just so long as there aren't huge set backs, I've called that a victory. Eventually, age will catch up and I'll have to at least consider something different...

By Blogger KiniWoman, At 9:35 AM, December 02, 2010

  • Honestly, it's really not the food but the wine that gets me every time. So, like with food, I really try and pace myself, limiting myself to sipping on a "full" glass or filling it only halfway, twice ;) Thanks for the chance!

  • So far, I've been avoiding my favorite holiday treat, eggnog, by letting the kids drink it all before I get home.

I get my exercise by going to the store to buy more eggnog.

  • I'm a vegetarian, so I just assume everything has meat or broth it in. That's how I keep from grazing. Sadly, that doesn't work at the dessert table.

By Blogger Lesley, At 11:34 AM, December 02, 2010

  • I let myself have the stuff when others offer it to me, or at a party, but I don't buy it myself (except Candy Cane Jo-Jo's) so it's not in the house. I figure if I make sure I eat healthy at home, I can splurge a bit when I'm out.

By Blogger Lunasea, At 12:07 PM, December 02, 2010

  • I stay in shape by lifting! I left the appetizer to my mouth! I lift the drink to my lips! I lift my head from the pillow to do it again the next day! : ) Happy Holidays!

  • I just make sure to keep up with my daily routine--no skipping out on my exercitse!

By Blogger Pearl, At 4:59 AM, December 03, 2010

  • I have started taking my gym clothes to work and changing before I leave for the gym--it helps motivate me to go directly to my workout instead of stopping at home where I can be easily distracted and blow off my exercise.

  • My strategy for handling the holidays works pretty well for me. I know the days that there will be parties and family get togethers. I allow myself to indulge on those days, but on the remaining days, I am very strict with my intake....steering completely clear of sugar and most carbs.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 9:53 PM, December 04, 2010

  • My strategy is to stay healthy all year round and indulge around the holiday season. I like to work out and I tend to eat clean year round, so when the holidays roll around I don't feel bad about sampling the goody tray.

  • Militant calorie counting is the only way I keep on track - well as close to the track as I can. Otherwise, when I bake, I make sure to eat one goody & give away the rest!

By Anonymous Melanie C., At 9:09 PM, December 05, 2010

  • So desperate to not gain, one year I kept track of each step I took. I had read some where that a certain number of steps equaled a certain number of calories! {IT gets funnier. I was too cheap to buy a device to help me. I counted and kept track by the 110's on paper}.

Now I have children. I'm impressed if I can get us all dressed!

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 9:18 PM, December 05, 2010

  • I always (ALWAYS) take a break between the meal and dessert. I'm not going to pass on dessert, but I do manage to spend about 45 minutes to an hour in between the two to take a walk or some other form of exercise. It gets in some cardio and makes me decide if I am REALLY hungry for that piece of pie!

By Blogger Judy, At 9:30 PM, December 05, 2010

  • I use the wii to dance with and stay fit and I'm not a big sweets eater so that's not really a problem. I just eat small portions of things I like so it works out pretty well.

Use an exercise that you love which will make it easier to stick with.

Holiday dinner, I was a young teen and mom worked so left instructions to put the roast 'on the stove' I did exactly as ordered and put it on the burner on top of the stove and later after mom was home and before the in laws came - the roast in its Pyrex dish literally exploded.
