Healthy eating during the holiday season

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and The Laughing Cow.

The holidays are officially upon us, and that means (among lots of other things) food. Often, a lot of it.

How do you manage so much good, but not necessarily good-for-you, food during this time of year?

Left to my own devices, I could live off appetizers year round. The lure of tiny sandwiches and food in a ball format is nearly too much for me to resist. So, for me, it's important to keep a regular meal routine. I make sure to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner as I normally do, perhaps a little lighter fare, though.

I am not someone who should go to a party hungry.

When I'm at a party, I'm probably supposed to tell you I just stick to the vegetable tray and drink water.

But, I'd be lying.

At a party, I decide on a few things that I'd like to try and I try them, but they have to fit on the smallest plate available.

If I routinely deny myself an item at the buffet, I find that I think about it, and give in, sometimes eating more than if I had just gotten some in the first place. After that, I try to carry a drink to occupy my hands and explore that gathering in the room away from the food.

I don't think there's any magic way to handle holiday food. You have to eat less, or move more. But, it's also a time for celebration and I try not to get too hung up about it and use some common sense.

Other ideas:

- The holidays are a great time to visit with old friends, consider meeting for a walk at the park rather than a meal, and catch up while you get a little exercise.

- Volunteer to bring your favorite healthy dish to the party. That way, you're assured of something you like and call fill up on if the other food choices aren't as healthy.

- Eat a high protein meal before you go to the party, it'll help you feel full, longer

How do you try to eat healthy and manage your portions during the holiday season with everyone showering unhealthy food choices on you? Do tell, for a chance to win a $150 Visa gift card!

  • If I do some holiday baking, I take all of it to wherever/whatever I was baking it for. I don’t keep any of it at my house. I will still eat it if I take it to work or to a party, but at least I don’t have leftovers to come home to! I also try to keep up some sort of workout routine, even during the busy holidays, so I can balance out the holiday goodies eating that I do!

  • Eating during the holidays is not easy sometimes. To stay healthy I always eat a small meal before I go so I don’t feel like I have to pack it on at the party. I would rather do that and have everyone say how svelt I look instead of hiding the pie when I walk in. Happy Holidays.

That helps immensely - I'm not hanging out by the food table stuffing my face full of food to avoid awkward small talk. Other than that, I try a little of everything and try not to get too uptight. Not only does this cut down on the calories but my kids can eat these with out bouncing off the walls. I also ask for small plates if I'm eating out or try to go before dinner hours and go when they still serve lunch, The lunch portions are smaller than the dinner portions. I up my exercise from 4 days a week to 6 days a week during the holidays so I CAN have that sugar cookie or slice of pie at the office party or family get togethers. I always have water, sometimes are brains think we are hungry but all we really need is a glass of water and we all know water is NO calorie beverage! :)

  • I found that the time I overeat too much is at dinner (especially when there is pasta or potatoes), so I've taken to eating on a bread plate....seriously. It sounds like a tiny portion, but I fill the plate so I feel like I've got a whole plate full, and usually it's plenty of food. If I get hungry later, I have a healthy snack. Works well at parties too. I let myself have whatever I want as long as it can fit on one small size plate.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 9:14 PM, December 26, 2010

  • For the holidays, I don’t indulge except for Christmas day. I promise myself that if I’m good all December, on Christmas I won’t be counting calories or feeling guilty for having an extra nut horn, or two. I also refuse to take home my mom’s leftovers because I know that’s just too much temptation to have in my refrigerator. While she pouts a bit, I know she understands my plight.

I also keep some low-calorie snacks on hand at work because there’s always cookie trays and goodies the weeks leading up to Christmas. From my lips straight to my hips and I swear it’s always worse during the holidays.

And when I'm Christmas shopping, I always bring along a bottle of water. The stores are hot and I know that I'd be tempted to stop for a soda or grab a quick fast-food snack..the water helps fill me up, keep me cool and it's much better for me than soda.

  • Hm, how to eat healthy. I always cheat my diet during holidays but somehow I still provide a good portion to eat. Some advices for me is, not to eat at all! Just kidding, who doesn't love food. One advice can be invite tons of people and buy hand eating food which makes you walk around more instead of carrying a plate and sitting down. Another advice can be spend all your money on gifts that you go dead broke and have to afford 1 hotdog per your family (5 members) =P. But in reality, I think buying health books and watching shows that counts the calories is the way to do it. Watching some of these shows tell you how much food you can consume in such little calories. Like a whole cornish hen is the same calorie of like 5 pieces of Mcdonald's chicken nugget. I was surprised how much this made me lose weight during a holiday. Also, give Santa the leftovers, dude ate all my cookies. In which at night when I crave something, I am too lazy because I got nothing. Try to hook a brother (Santa) up when he be riding that sleigh.

  • I try to avoid the sweets, and stick to the fresh fruit and veggies - then I don't worry about the portions! For any of the “bad” foods I indulge in, I limit portions to no more than a 1/2 cup. I actually have a 1/2 cup measuring cup in my purse that I've had in there for awhile now, so I can eyeball it pretty accurately.

  • I eat everything I am interested in during the holidays, but I only eat one spoonful of each item to avoid overindulgence.

  • I don't bother to limit myself during the holidays. I have 11 1/2 months to be saint about eating.
